Despite his stated desire to fight this month, it looks like Maryland heavyweight boxer Seth Mitchell will be taking it easy for at least the next few weeks.

Mitchell was preparing for a chance to avenge his only loss against Detroit’s Johnathon Banks last month, when an injury to Banks’ hand postponed the fight. Now it appears the fight will take place in June. Details about the date and location remain unclear, but Mitchell has resigned himself to waiting at least a few months before returning to the ring.

"It’s not fun," Mitchell told Stiff Jab by phone. “I’m the type of fighter that likes to stay busy.”

Mitchell has been keeping busy and in shape by visiting the gym two to three times per week. But he has been careful not to over-exert himself, and admitted the time off may do him some good in the long run.

Trey Burke Leads Michigan Past Michigan State

by Gautham Nagesh

University of Michigan freshman point guard Trey Burke faced a tall task before the season: replace Lakers rookie and burgeoning playmaker Darius Morris in the backcourt for the ascendant Wolverines. Roughly halfway through the season, Burke has done his best to make Morris just a memory, leading Michigan past the hated Spartans 60-59 at Crisler Arena in a thrilling contest.

Tuesday was billed as a matchup of multi-talented swingmen, with Draymond Green of Michigan State and Tim Hardaway Jr. of Michigan expected to play the marquee roles. But Green missed an off-balance jumper to win the game at the buzzer and it was senior sharpshooter Stu Douglas who scored the winning basket for the Wolverines on a fast-break outlet from Burke. The Columbus, Ohio native drew two defenders before leaning back to dish the ball to Douglas for the winning basket.

Heavyweight Seth Mitchell Shows Sparty Some Love

by Gautham Nagesh

Just got back from the media workout at Kennedy Recreation Center for this weekend’s HBO Championship Boxing card in Washington, where I spoke briefly with rising heavyweight boxer Seth “Mayhem” Mitchell. Many believe Mitchell is America’s best shot at re-capturing the heavyweight championship, but today the talk was focused on his beloved Michigan State Spartans.

The Brandywine, Md. native stopped by the packed Capitol Lounge on Saturday night to join his fellow MSU fans and alumni in cheering for the Spartans but it wasn’t enough as they lost the inaugural Big Ten championship game to Wisconsin 42-39. Mitchell was judicious when discussing the defeat, avoiding the sour grapes that we Michigan fans normally associate with East Lansing alums.

"Yeah they should have called [the penalty]…if it was against Michigan State I would have wanted them to call it," Mitchell said in reference to the 4th-quarter running into the kicker penalty incurred by MSU’s Isaiah Lewis, which negated a punt return into Wisconsin territory by Keshawn Martin and ultimately wound up cost MSU the game.
